YOU SHOWED ME THE WAY, WHEN I WAS SOMEONE IN DISTRESS, A HEART IN SEARCH OF HAPPINESS, YOU SHOWED ME THE WAY. MY SKIES WERE SO GREY, I NEVER KNEW I'D FEEL A THRILL, I COULDN'T DREAM A DREAM UNTIL YOU SHOWED ME THE WAY. THE MOMENT YOU FOUND ME, THE SHADOWS AROUND ME JUST DISAPPEARED FROM VIEW. THE WORLD BECAME ROSY, EACH CORNER SO COZY, DARLING, ALL BECAUSE OF YOU! Detour Ahead 04:50
Smooth road, clear day But why am I the only one Travelin' this way How strange the road you love Should be so easy Can there be a detour ahead Wake up, slow down Before you crash and break your heart Gullible clown You fool, you're headin' In the wrong direction Can't you see the detour ahead The further you travel The harder to unravel The way he spins around you Turn back while there is time Can't you see the danger sign Soft shoulders surround you Smooth road, clear night Oh lucky me, that suddenly I saw the light I'm turning back away From all this trouble Smooth road, smooth road No detour ahead Songwriters: Herb Ellis / John Frigo / Lou Carter Detour Ahead lyrics © Princess Music Publishing Corp

HEAR THE CRAZY MUSIC IN THE TREES, SEE THE FLOWERS DANCIN' IN THE BREEZE, OLD MAN MOON BEGINS TO GLOW, HE'S JOININ' IN THE LATE LATE SHOW! BIRDS THAT SHOULD BE DREAMIN' START IN CHIRPIN' A SONG. WHILE FIREFLIES ARE GLEAMIN', WE KISS, OOH, KISS, OOH, ALL NIGHT LONG! THEN WE AMBLE BACK TO MY FRONT DOOR, SAY GOODNIGHT AND THEN WE KISS SOME MORE! GUESS YOU KNOW I LIKE YOU SO, IT STARTED AT THE LATE LATE SHOW!

about

"I Hear Music" is Diane Marino's 7th CD release consisting of great swing and nostalgic tunes from the 30s, 40's & 50's. Bluesy as well as energetic and swinging fun, these songs get a fresh treatment with innovative arrangements by Diane Marino.

*Liner Notes* -Ron Wynn
The great jazz vocalist provides audiences a special joy and inspiration, even though they know that their excellence will seldom get the widespread publicity or commercial rewards of lesser talented singers operating in the pop sphere. Instead, they seek fresh ways of performing the tunes that have shaped the American popular song canon. They also know that every time out their renditions of these anthems will be compared to others who've come before them, and their abilities to find fresh ways of covering these numbers will be assessed in a tough manner by both critics and fans.

Diane Marino has proven herself more than capable of handling the demands and challenges of being a first-rate jazz singer. For decades she has teamed with husband and bassist Frank Marino in presenting jazz that is both timeless and contemporary, polished, yet exuberant and soulful. They are prime examples of what's become a familiar Nashville journey, outstanding East Coast players finding their way to Music City and becoming an established and familiar part of the jazz community.

It's no surprise that her newest album "I Hear Music" is a triumph, filled with consistently memorable and exciting selections containing numerous examples of vocal and instrumental splendor.

First, Ms. Marino is a superb singer. She's equally at home with up-tempo or ballad pieces, and over her multi-decade career has
easily moved from swing-oriented mainstream fare to Afro-Latin and Brazilian romps, show tunes, blues & R&B, even covers of recent rock and pop hits. But the menu for "I Hear Music" is predominantly classic jazz and swing-oriented items, with two of the best songs penned by the great alto saxophonist and bandleader Benny Carter, and others written by such ace composers as Burton Lane, Buddy Kaye, another alto saxophonist (and prime John Coltrane influence) Earl Bostic, and even Ella Fitzgerald, one of the contributors to "You Showed Me The Way."

Second, the backing band is equally brilliant, giving each number energetic and superior backing and support, both in terms of solo statement and ensemble cohesion. Besides Frank Marino's rock-solid bass contributions, there's consistently marvelous solos on either tenor or soprano from Joel Frahm, like the Marino’s an East Coast transplant to Music City, as well as super-tight, always in the right groove drummer Chris Brown. Diane Marino proves a double threat as she's also a fine pianist.

Another added weapon is guitarist Pat Bergeson. This core crew is well augmented by some sparkling special guests. Vibist Chuck Redd, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, trumpeter Leif Shires, and keyboardist/organist Brad Cole, as well as multi-saxophonist Cole Burgess and trombonist Desmond Ng enhance the proceedings at key moments throughout the 12-song set. While every tune is a delight, some personal favorites include the title track, Diane Marino's treatments of "The Late, Late Show," quite different from Dakota Stanton’s but just as wonderful, the delightful version of "When Lights Are Low” and two other numbers whose approaches couldn't be more dissimilar. "Let Me Off Uptown" is an R&B./swing staple, a tune that calls for a vibrant and suggestive approach, while "It Could Happen To You" is more of a wish/dream fulfillment effort. Diane Marino does both majestically, striking the ideal mood both times and turning them into definitive, highly personal versions that can stand against any other performed versions of these numbers.

"I Hear Music" will no doubt be one of the finest jazz albums issued by anyone this year and I believe the jazz world at large will recognize the immense talents of Diane Marino and acknowledge that she belongs in the upper echelon of jazz singers.
